Mothers: It’s important to have this discussion early, before your daughter’s first period arrives, before she becomes confused about body changes and before her period surprises or embarrasses her. Talk Early, Talk Often. Provide your daughter comprehensive coverage on the subject of puberty and menstruation so she can make informed decisions. When is the best time to talk to your daughter about having her period? As a rule, it's a good idea to address the topic any time she shows an interest.

 

Teachers: Some parents may object to their children being instructed about puberty (and menstruation in particular) in the classroom. Before the subject is introduced, we strongly advise teachers to check with the school health advisory committee and/or principal about the district's policy on puberty education. Every child's parent should be advised about plans for puberty education beforehand.
